While Yogyakarta's city beaches (like Parangtritis) are convenient, the real coastal beauty is about 1.5–2 hours south in Gunungkidul — a regency of dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and some of the clearest water in Java.
Indrayanti Beach
The most famous of the bunch, known for powdery white sand and calm, clear blue water good for swimming. It's well set up for visitors, with warungs serving fresh seafood right on the sand and rental umbrellas and chairs available.
Krakal, Kukup, Baron & Sundak
These four beaches sit close together and are often visited as a cluster in one trip. Baron has a river meeting the sea and a small fishing harbor; Kukup has a rocky islet connected by a footbridge; Krakal and Sundak both offer long, wide stretches of sand that are less crowded than Indrayanti.
Timang Beach
Not a swimming beach — it's known for a rugged, adrenaline-heavy experience: a traditional hand-operated gondola that carries visitors across the waves to a small rocky island, plus dune-buggy tours in the surrounding area.
Nglambor Beach
The best pick if you want to get in the water rather than just look at it — a reef-protected cove ideal for snorkeling, often paired with rock climbing on the surrounding cliffs.
Wediombo & Watu Lumbung
Quieter, more local-feeling alternatives with the same dramatic scenery as the bigger-name beaches but a fraction of the visitors — good picks if crowds are your main concern.
Getting there and planning your visit
Most Gunungkidul beaches are 1.5–2 hours from central Yogyakarta by car or scooter, depending on which one you choose.
A single combined entrance ticket often covers several neighboring beaches (Baron, Kukup, Krakal, Sundak) since they sit within the same coastal stretch — check current pricing locally, as it changes.
Renting a car with a driver for the day is the easiest way to hit 2–3 beaches without navigating unfamiliar roads yourself.
