Angkringan Culture Yogyakarta's Street Food Soul

An angkringan is a modest street cart, usually lit by a single oil lamp, serving nasi kucing, small portions of rice with a dab of sambal and shredded fish, alongside skewers of chicken skin, quail eggs, and tempeh grilled over charcoal. The ritual is part of the appeal, you sit on a straw mat or plastic stool, grab whatever skewers look good, and the vendor tallies up your bill by counting sticks at the end. Kopi Joss, coffee served with a hot piece of charcoal dropped straight into the glass, is the signature drink at many angkringan near Tugu Station. Expect to pay very little for a full, satisfying meal, and don't rush, angkringan is as much about lingering and chatting as it is about eating.
